Sharon L. Dillon (Wickings) passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026 after a long illness in Syracuse. She was born on January 28, 1952, in Rochester to Norman and Beryl Wickings, and grew up in Fairport.
Sharon, known to many as Sherry, graduated from Fairport High School in 1970 and briefly attended SUNY Geneseo. Shortly thereafter, she moved to Florida, where she met Harlan R. Dillon. The two became engaged and were married on September 26, 1974, in Fairport.
As Harlan served in the United States Air Force, Sherry lived near several USAF bases until 1980. That year, while living in Kingston, NY, they welcomed their first son, Scott. In 1982, the family moved to Rome, NY, near Griffiss Air Force Base, where their second son, Travis, was born later that year.
Sharon and Harlan shared 48 years of marriage until Harlan’s passing in 2023. Sherry spent the last 44 years of her life in Rome, where she lived an active and engaged life. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, played hand bells, volunteered in the church’s clothing closet, and helped with the well-known Muster Day Meal during Rome’s Honor America Days.
Sherry was also a certified Special Olympics golf instructor and was passionate about volunteering and supporting its mission. In her later years, she worked the polls on Election Day at the Ava Dorfman Adult Center.
She had a deep appreciation for etiquette, and her penmanship was known for its elegance and precision. Sharon was also a talented quilter, and her work was displayed at the View Arts Center in Old Forge. She was known for making exceptional pies, tending to her beautiful flower gardens, and growing tomatoes, rhubarb, and squash at her home in Rome. Over the last 2 years Sherry enjoyed spending time with her neighbor Charles Vaccaro. They would often sit and talk, listen to records, go to movies, and take long rides in the car. Their companionship meant the world to Sherry.Â
Sherry cherished staying connected with family, neighbors, and friends. She could often be found at home preparing meals for her family, enjoying a glass of her favorite wine or scotch.
Sharon is survived by her sons, Scott (Megan), Travis (Patrick), and Sean (Kelly); her grandchildren, Rachel, Jordan, Cameron, and Delaney; her beloved dog, Liesel; and her special companion, Charles Vaccaro.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 13, 2026 from 4pm – 7pm at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St., Rome.
