Nina Jane Barone Hyde, 102 of Rome, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.  Born in Rome on March 28, 1924, she was the daughter of Henry and Mary (Scolapio) Barone, and the beloved wife of Robert “Mike” Hyde.

Nina was truly one of a kind.  Intelligent, independent, loving, and caring, she possessed a generous heart, a wonderful personality, and just enough feistiness to keep everyone on their toes.  She had a remarkable ability to make people feel special and remembered.  Whether through a thoughtful gesture, a kind word, or one of the countless cards she faithfully sent for birthdays, holidays, and special occasions, Nina never missed an opportunity to let someone know they were loved.

Family was the heart of Nina’s world, and she was a cherished presence at holidays, birthday parties, and celebrations.  Everyone knew her cheerful “Hi, Hi, Hi!” greeting and her love of pins and brooches.  Gifts from her great-nieces and great-nephews at birthdays and Christmas filled her drawers over the years, each one a reminder of their love.

A graduate of Rome Free Academy who attended the Utica School of Commerce, Nina enjoyed a long career with General Cable and Martin Marietta, earning numerous awards and commendations.  Her service to the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association earned her recognition as AFCEAN of the Month in 1992.  The New York Senate honored her 100th birthday in 2024.  She was also an active, devoted member of St. John the Baptist Church in Rome.

Nina shared an especially close bond with her sisters, Barbara and Jean, who spent countless hours caring for her.  Their love, companionship, and devoted care brought her comfort and reflected the lifelong closeness they shared.

Nina is survived by her loving sisters Jean Barone Ceci and Barbara Barone Vota; her cherished nieces and nephews Joseph (Mary) Sherman, Vincent Ceci and Linda Schroettinger, Joseph (Andrea) Ceci, Mary Ceci Little, Ann Ceci Ermacor, Brenda Vota (John) Dorso, and Christine Vota (Randy) Pallas; several great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; and a great-great-great niece.  She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister Doris Sherman Summa.

Nina will be deeply missed at every family gathering and remembered for her kindness, generosity, and love.  While we may no longer hear her familiar “Hi, Hi, Hi!” when we walk through the door, we will carry the warmth of that greeting, and the love behind it, in our hearts forever.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Church in Rome at 11am on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Calling hours will be from 10am – 11am prior to the mass.  Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo Street, Rome.
