Michael W. Hickey, 78, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026 in Rome Hospital after battling a brief illness.

   He was born on June 18, 1947 in Rome and grew up in Hamilton.  He returned to Rome with his wife Janis and his sons Ryan and Timothy.  He was an MVP with the US Army serving in Korea.

   Mike had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for life.  He was an avid golfer and always enjoyed watching sports and enjoying times spent with family and friends.  He was a member of the VFW Smith Post.  Mike will be remembered for his strength and unwavering love for his family.

    Mike is survived by his loving wife Janis and his sons Ryan (Nikki) and Timothy, all of Rome.  He is also survived by two grandchildren Coavin and Riely Hickey, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

  Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026 at 7pm at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St., Rome with Fr. James Tormey as officiant.  Calling hours will be from 4-7pm prior to the service.

Hickey family -

We are so saddened to hear of your loss. What a wonderful, wonderful man!!!

We have been lucky enough to know and share his love of sports, especially Smith Post since Ryan and i were kids. Always, respectful to my father as an umpire and over the years he became one of Posts BIGGEST supporters!

My son thought the world of him. We were so proud to witness him honored in Saugerties, at the state tournament, when Post took SECOND place :) An honor so well deserved for his service, as well as, support for legion ball.

Games certainly will not be the same not seeing him, as i'm sure all your lives will forever have a…

Jan, Ryan and Tim,


I want to send along my condolences to you guys. I often remember visiting and hanging out with you and Mr. Hickey at your house and Smith Post games. Rest in peace and I am sure my mom and dad will greet him when he arrives.


And Mitty the Kitty will be there to greet him too :-)
