John Richard Occhipinti
John Richard “Dick” Occhipinti, age 83, of Rome, passed away Friday, July 1, 2022, at St. Luke's Hospital.
John was born in Rome on August 3, 1938, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Gratch) Occhipinti. He attended Rome schools and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1957. He attended SUNY Oswego, receiving a Master of Science in Vocational Education. John served a combined 30 years with the US Air Force and Air National Guard. He was employed by US Airways, Pittsburgh, PA, as an aircraft mechanic, retiring in 2000 after 13 years. He previously worked for Western Airlines, Mohawk Airlines, and Piedmont Airlines. John was a member of St. Peter's Church, the USAF Sergeants Association, and the Tappet Twirlers Auto Club.
John loved all things mechanical, including automobiles, aircraft, ships, and trains. He was also an avid lover of historyand music. If he knew someone was in need, he would go out of his way to help them. Most of all, he loved sharing meals with friends and family.
John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Paulette Occhipinti; his sister Christine Betrus; nieces and nephews Joseph Occhipinti, Jason Occhipinti, Deborah Murphy, Erin and Joseph Cavallaro, and many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Peter's Church with the Rev. Sean O'Brien as celebrant. There will beno calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jervis Public Library.
John’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Rome Health, St. Luke’s, and Bethany Gardens for their assistance and care.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo Street.
