John G. Santoro, 92, of Rome passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 with his wife Patti and daughter Nicole by his side.
John was born on August 15, 1933 in Rome, the son of Nicholas and Domenica “Minnie” Vinci Santoro. He was a 1951 graduate of Rome Free Academy, and later went on to receive a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physics from Syracuse University in 1957. In 1958, he was employed at the Rome Air Force Development Center as a Systems and Intelligence Analyst until 1970. In this capacity, he performed systems and intelligence analysis for various government agencies and had also written thirteen technical documents that were used throughout the US Air Force. He moved to Reno, NV in 1970 and enrolled at the University of Reno. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1971 and a Master’s degree in School Administration in 1973. He was employed in 1971 as an elementary education and mathematics teacher in Reno until he retired in 1992. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Society and the Nevada Teacher’s Association.
John was also a true sports enthusiast. He participated in weightlifting, tennis, skiing, baseball, football, and track. He holds four patents for weightlifting equipment, a copyright of an Individualized Mathematics program for grades 1 – 8, and also fifteen artistic drawings.
On October 11, 1980 John married Patricia Smith in Reno, a blessed union of 45 years.
John is survived by his wife Patricia and beloved family: a daughter and son-in-law Nicole and Michael Sterling of Reno NV; a son John N. Santoro of FL; a daughter Rochelle Santoro of Baltimore MD; a daughter Rene Cariglia of Reno NV; and 3 grandchildren Madison Sterling, Makenzy Sterling, and John N. Santoro Jr. He is also survived by a brother-in-law Dr. Dennis Smith of Atlanta GA, and several aunts, uncles, nephew, nieces, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Helen and brother-in-law Vincent DeAngelis.
The family would like to thank all of his family and friends who, over the years, showed their endless love and devotion to John.
Private funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo Street. There were no calling hours. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Parish’s Memorial Fund.
