Harlan R. Dillon
Harlan R. Dillon of Rome, NY passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, while in residence at Bethany Gardens.
Harlan was born on June 15th, 1944, in Bloomington Il. He later moved to Texas City TX, where he graduated from Texas City High School in 1963. After graduation Harlan enlisted in the US Air Force, where he earned the nickname “Matt”. He served in the roles of Aircraft Mechanic & Instructor and as a Recruiter. His final role was at Griffiss Air Force Base as Base Career Advisor. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran and was medically retired after 18.5 years of service. On September 26th, 1975, Harlan married Sharon Wickings in her hometown of Fairport. They shared 47 years of marriage.
Harlan spent his retirement active in Scouting, serving as Pack Leader, Trainer, and a Wood Badge Member. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his dedication. He also was a lover and owner of Classic Cars. Harlan was a woodworker and instructed Woodworking at MVCC’s Rome Campus for a time. He could most likely be found in his man cave with a Bud Light or a glass of “Chillable Red.”
Harlan is survived by his wife Sharon, his sons Sean (Kelly), Scott (Megan), and Travis (Patrick); his sister Beverly; 4 grandchildren Jordan, Cameron, Delaney, and Rachel. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in TX. Harlan was predeceased by 2 older brothers Gordon and Bill.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 27, 2023 from 1-3pm at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Rome Humane Society or a preferred Veterans Organization.
