Vincent J. DeAngelis
Vincent (Vinnie) Joseph DeAngelis, 91, of Rome, passed away on April 25th, 2020, after a brief illness. He was born on January 12th, 1929 in Canastota, New York, the son of the late Louis and Nunziata Morabito DeAngelis. On June 20th, 1953 he married Elena (Helen) Santoro, a blessed union of 59 years, until her passing on March 28th, 2013.
For years Vinnie was the proud owner of Seneca Welding and Fabricating located in Canastota, NY. A dedicated tradesman, Vinnie worked all his life to attain his business. Vinnie learned his trade while working at Nolan Corporation in Rome, NY. During his time there, he met and fell in love with Helen. With her support, he began the journey to self-employment. Originally doing work out of his garage, Vinnie founded his company on hard work and dedication. He was a highly skilled welder and fabricator, specializing in a variety of areas, including the rare practice of hyperbaric welding. He was always happy to share his wealth of knowledge and spent his evenings teaching as a welding instructor at Mohawk Valley Community College. He was passionate about his work and retired at the age of 81.
The youngest of six children, Vinnie was always at the heart of his extensive family. He endeared himself to all who knew him with his funny and “slightly” embellished stories. He loved to make people laugh and the more they did, the more he talked. Vinnie was an incredible father, teaching his two children everything he knew about dedication and love. He then extended those same lessons to his grandchildren and left them with countless memories. He was a devoted husband, caring for Helen during her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Vinnie was selfless and kind and all who knew him loved him. Even at 91, he never lost his sense of humor. Over the past seven years, he became the jokester of the Presbyterian Home, promising to “give the boot” to all his friends. He never failed to put a smile on everyone’s face and brought a light wherever he went.
Vinnie is survived by his loving daughter Vanessa Miller of Rome, who visited him multiple times a week, always with his favorite snacks and Dunkin coffee in hand. His son and daughter-in-law, Louis and Barbara DeAngelis of Rome; grandchildren, Brittany Miller, Brandy Miller and her fiancé Kittu Hoke, Rachel DeAngelis, Eric Sliwinski; great grandchildren Scarlett and Ray Sliwinski; brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Patricia Santoro of Rome; loving nieces Renee Cariglia, who always sent him cards and homemade cookies from Reno, Kathi Cadrette and her husband, Lenny, who visited him frequently with gifts and treats; special friends Mark Miller and Georgie Brenning along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, parents, in-laws, Nick and Domenica Santoro, and sisters, Angela (Frank) Campola, Rose (Mack) Troilo, Josephine (Peter) Domenico, Marie Taverna Ogg, and Violet DeAngelis.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Presbyterian Home, New Hartford, especially Becky, Jessie, Alicia, Jennifer, Sharon, and Christina, for their special, loving care of “Big Papa” for the past seven years. They are truly angels on earth.
Additionally, a special thank you to cousin, John Vero Jr., who made sure to always visit Vinnie to share time together.
Graveside services will take place at St. John’s Cemetery, Tuesday, April 28th, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio offering the prayer. Church services will take place at a future date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
