Stella Maria DeSimone

Stella Maria DeSimone, 89, of Rome NY, entered Heaven on Friday, January 17, 2020. Stella was born on July 10, 1930, to Carlo and Letizia Ansonia Cangiano. She was their last surviving child.

Stella was a devout Christian woman and a ray of sunshine, even on a cloudy, stormy day. She was the strength of her family and had a smile that would always light up their hearts. She was also a wonderful cook and taught her children and grandchildren to cook, bake, and clean. She always gave thoughtful, sage advice. Stella’s generosity, caring, and love for her family was overwhelming and will live in our hearts forever.

On November 27, 1948, Stella and Salvatore Joseph DeSimone were blessed in marriage at St. John the Baptist Church in Rome for 63 years until his passing in 2012. They were blessed with daughters Denise (Larry) Kalk, Anne Marie (Frank Hoke) Thayer, and Lorie Ann (Michael) Mudd; grandchildren Kriste (Ryan) Ross, Angela (Kevin) Mudd Mayo, Russell Joseph (Mary Mullen) Thayer, Tracy Mudd, Marianna DeSimone (Zachery) Thayer, Lawrence Matthew (Tiffany) Kalk; and great-grandchildren Cody Singletary Thayer, Isabella Ross, Blake Palyo, Rylan Apperson Mayo, Zoe Ross, and Bryce Mayo. She also adored her Cavalier King Charles, Lily.

Stella was a dedicated, compassionate, and loving employee of Stone Hedge Nursing Home for over 25 years. The residents and their families loved Stella’s caring and generous heart.

Stella was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore DeSimone, her sisters and their spouses, Anna (Louis) Mosca, Eleanor (Rubin) DeSantis, and Martha (John) Muttillo, and all of her brothers- and sisters-in-law in the DeSimone family, making Stella the last survivor of that generation.

We give our sincere gratitude and heartfelt thanks to Carol Morrill, Stella’s caretaker for over six years. She was truly dedicated and loved Stella with her complete heart and soul. She went over and above for Stella’s and her family’s well-being. She was a genuine daughter to her.

We are grateful to the Rome Hospital Intensive Care and Rehabilitation units.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 West Embargo St., Rome. There will be no calling hours.

A celebratory mass for a Christian burial honoring Stella will be held on Friday, January 24, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church with Fr. Abe Esper as celebrant. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Interment will be at St. John’s Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Stella. Envelopes will be available at the Church.
