Josephine Calicchia


Josephine Calicchia, 103, of Rome, beloved sister and aunt, peacefully passed away on June 10, 2019 at Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Health Care Facility. Josie was the daughter of Alio and Francesca Calicchia from Italy.

Josie worked for the Rome Manufacturing for over 40 years. In 1948, she completed training and served as a volunteer nurse’s aide for the American Red Cross. Having left high school to work and help support her family during the Depression, she proudly completed her GED in 1981.

Josie had many passions including gardening, cooking, baking, painting, and was highly accomplished in knitting, crocheting, ceramics and Bunka embroidery. She was an avid Yankees fan. Josie was a very devout Catholic and a member of St. John the Baptist Church. She was dedicated to her family and serving God and will be greatly missed.

Josephine is survived by her dear sister Selma Calicchia, and nieces and nephews, William (Ingrid) Fernandez II, Venice FL, Richard (Maureen) Fernandez, Lake Tahoe, CA., Mark (Annette) Fernandez, Seattle, WA., Bonnie (Armand) Castro, Bradenton, FL., Robin Fernandez, Bradenton, FL., Brian (Trish) Eldridge, Endicott, NY., John (Charlene) Eldridge, Niagara Falls, Canada, Richard Blaine Calicchia, Rome, Sharon (Robert) Gulick, Rome, Lisa Race, Rome, and Mary Carole (Christopher) Kam, Syracuse, 19 great-nieces and nephews, 14 great-great nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Clayton Eldridge, Niagara Falls, Canada. She is predeceased by siblings Peter (Ruth) Calicchia, Richard Calicchia, Mickey Eldridge, Eda (William) Fernandez, and niece Norma Eldridge.

The family wishes to express sincere thanks to the compassionate staff of the third floor HC at Rome Memorial Hospital for their love and care extended to Josie. We extend the upmost gratitude to the special care-givers, especially Chastity and Betty, whose services and helpfulness enabled Josie to live at home through-out her senior years.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the Church prior to the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Josie’s memory may be made to the Catholic charity of your choice.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
