John R. Devlin


John R. Devlin, 83, of Rome passed away on Monday, November 5, 2018 in the Heritage Health Care Center.

He was born on February 10, 1935 in Montpelier, VT the son of John T. and Leda Steinhilber Devlin. On February 15, 1962 in St. Louis, MO he married Thirza Beck. He attended schools in Brockton MA. He proudly served with the US Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957. He was well known as a Stock Broker and manager of the local Tucker Anthony branch and continued to follow the Stock Market during his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, playing backgammon and cribbage as well as spending time with his extensive model train collection. His most treasured moments were spent aboard his boat incentive with friends and family and later in life cruising the world’s seas with his wife. He was a proud member of the E. L. Smith Detachment of the Marine Corps League and Stanwix Men’s Club.

John is survived by his beloved family, his wife of 56 years, Thirza; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Aimee Devlin of Bozeman, MT; cherished grandchildren, Gabrielle (Paul) Trela, Willa Devlin, Andreanna Eggan and Andrew Eggan and son-in-law, Mark Eggan. He is predeceased by his daughter Jayn S. Eggan who passed away on August 10, 2016.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Monday morning at 11:00 by the Rev. Frank G. Graichen of the Trinity United Church of Christ at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Marine Corps League, 307 Adams Street, Rome, NY 13440. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
