Leonard D. Summa


Leonard D. Summa, 90, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, August 4, 2018 in the Betsy Ross Nursing Home after a long illness.

Leonard was born on April 19, 1928 in Rome the son of Donato and Carmella Pace Summa. He attended RFA, he earned an engineering degree from RPI and a Master’s Degree from Syracuse University in Business Administration. He proudly served in the US Army from 1946 to 1948. He was a member of the Army band where he was an accomplished clarinet player.

He was the lead engineer at Revere Copper and Brass, Inc. He served as the president of the Rome Board of Education for six years. On October 20, 2007 he married Doris Barone Sherman in St. John the Baptist Church.

Leonard is survived by his beloved family, his wife Doris, a step-son Joseph Jr. (Mary) Sherman of Buffalo; step-grandchildren, Joseph (Alicia) Sherman and Maria Sherman; step-great grandchildren, Abigail Sherman and Joseph Sherman the III; a sister Mary Ann Summa; nieces and nephews, Carl and Christy Weaver, Michael and Jeanine Weaver, Linda Hunt, Donna (Gene) Kelly and Kristine and Lauren Quail. He was predeceased by a sister Grace Weaver and a brother Dominick Summa.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Tuesday afternoon, August 7th at 2:00 in St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the Church on Tuesday from 12:30 to 2:00 prior to the Mass.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
