Salvatore “Sam” Guiliano
Salvatore “Sam” Guiliano, 97, of Rome, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2017 in the Rome Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility with his loving family by his side.
He was born on January 6, 1920 in New York City the son of Loreto and Carmella Esposito Guiliano. On October 4, 1944 at St. Anthony’s Church, Utica he married Jean Testa, a blessed union of 68 years until her death on July 11, 2013. He attended New York City schools.
Sam enlisted into the United States Army on August 6, 1941 and served under General George “2 guns” Patton during World War II. He received decorations and citations including the Bronze Star Medal, Overseas Service Bar, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars. During WWII he smuggled his dog Schnapps home to the US from Germany with the help of a Priest. He then worked as a supervisor for Revere Copper and Brass Inc.
In July 1997 he was sworn in as the Chief of the Rome Auxiliary Police and served for 24 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church.
Sam is survived by his beloved family, two daughters, Theresa Ann Stanwix and Carmel Zmudosky; two sons and daughters-in-law, Samuel and Donna Guiliano and Thomas and Bonita Guiliano, cherished grandchildren Deborah Laughinghouse, Pamela Raulli, Lisa Guiliano,Tommy and Tessa Zmudosky, Aaron and Tammy Guiliano, Jennifer and Jason Nasto, Kathryn and Ryan Gattari and Laura and Eric Noble, Sarah Ann, Emily and Nicholas Raulli. Great-grandchildren, Taylor Laughinghouse, Santino, Gracie and Luca Guiliano, Joseph and Julianna Nasto, Ryan Jr., Victor and Carl Gattari. He was predeceased by sons-in-law, John Stanwix and Thomas Zmudosky Sr.; five brothers, Frank, Joe, Phil, Sal and Larry Guiliano; three sisters, Lena Guiliano, Mary Mendola and Ida Barber.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff of Rome Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility for the compassion and care given to Sam.
Funeral services will be celebrated on Friday afternoon at 2:00 in St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the Church on Friday afternoon from 1 to 2 prior to the Mass.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sam’s memory to St. John the Baptist Church Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available at the Church.
