Frank A. Calicchia
Frank A. Calicchia, 75, of Rome, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2016.
Frank was born on October 19, 1940 in Rome, the son of Primo and Lydia Marcoccia Calicchia. On July 1, 1968 he was united in marriage to Lorayne Vaccaro in St. John the Baptist Church, a blessed union of 48 years.
Frank graduated from RFA in 1958 and was proud of all his wonderful classmates. He proudly and honorably served his country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam war, serving overseas as a weapon specialist.
He was a member of the Henry P. Smith Post #24 American Legion, Camillus Gun Club and the Greenway-Verona Rod and Gun Club. He was a member of the Smith Post 1955 NYS championship baseball team, celebrating its 50th anniversary ceremony at the RFA field. He spent many years as the official scorekeeper for the Smith Post baseball team and loved every minute of it.
He enjoyed hunting and recently fly fishing, anxiously awaiting spring. He was passionate about attending all of his granddaughters' sporting events. Frank was adamant about his special "macaroni Thursday" with his family, spending the entire day tending the "sauce". When asked his date of birth, as happened so many times, he always smiled and said, "the day before Mickey Mantle's"!
Frank is survived by his beloved family, his wife Lorayne, devoted son Nicholas, cherished granddaughters, the "E" girls, Elizabeth Rose and Elana Calicchia; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Jean Vaccaro of Chula Vista, CA; niece and godchild, Tara (Edgar) Zaragoza and nephew Daniel (Virginia) Vaccaro of CA., uncles, John Calicchia and Joseph Aquino; cousins , Mary Murray, Susan Haggas, Loretta (Bud) Marcus, Anne M. and John M. Caliccia
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful and thoughtful care Frank received from the doctors and entire staff of Rome Hospital during his brief stay. A heartfelt thank you to Frank's buddies and friends that visited him often and brought happiness to him; also to Drs. Contronea, Talladini and staff and Dr. Potluri.
Funeral services will be celebrated on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 at St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday from 11 to 1 at the Church prior to the Mass.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Frank's memory to a charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the Mass.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
