Josephine Grace Vella Spohn


Josephine Grace Vella Spohn, of Rome, passed away at the home of her daughter (JoAnn) in Brooklyn, New York on Tuesday, September 15, 2015.

Josephine is survived by her beloved family, four children, Mary Sue Peirce (Rich) of Wichita, KS, JoAnn Nayer-Grutza (Mike) of Brooklyn, NY, William Spohn (Marilyn) of Wexford, PA and Chuck Spohn (Becky) of Little Rock, AR, as well as 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was born February 9, 1921 in Rome, NY, married Veto Spohn on June 24, 1950. Veto passed away on April 24, 1981. She settled into life as a devoted mother, talented cook, and faithful Catholic. Her professional career included a brief time at WKAL Radio, and many wonderful years as a faithful switchboard operator and business clerk at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Josephine will be most remembered by those who knew her for her gentle and kind nature, and an out-going personality that could have gotten her elected to ANY public office. She will be missed by many.

Funeral services will be celebrated on Wednesday morning, September 23, at 11:00 in St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Church on Wednesday morning from 10:15 to 11:00 prior to the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Josephine's memory to Caring Hospice Services, 3039 Avenue U, Brooklyn, NY 11229. Envelopes will be available at the Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
