Ruth Nashton Proia

Ruth Nashton Proia, 88, of Rome, winged her way to the heavenly realm on Friday, August 7, 2015 surrounded by her loving family.

Waiting to welcome her are her husband Cataldo Proia; her mother Blanche Nashton; her sisters, Virginia Rayland and Anise Centro and her brother Alex Nashton. Ruth is survived by her devoted son Robert David Curtis; loving daughter-in-law Elvira Curtis; a faithful sister Monica; many nieces and nephews; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth was an independent entrepreneur. She was strong and self-sufficient. After waiting tables at the Paramount Diner, she put herself through cosmetology school and worked for and then ran the Elite Beauty Salon. Ruth then struck out on her own and became a much sought after hair stylist in her own establishment, The Glamour Salon. After she married her beloved Cataldo, Ruth worked at his gravel business and became his bookkeeper. She was a woman of many talents.

In her spare time, Ruth would crochet, go to garage sales, enjoyed the outdoors and was most happy when she was fishing. She spent hours fishing the local lakes and streams and spent some winters in Texas salt water fishing.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all the family, friends and medical staff for all their support and kindness during Ruth's final days. It is deeply appreciated.

Relatives and friends may call at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St. on Thursday afternoon from 4 to 5:00.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Rome Humane Society, 6247 Lamphear Rd., Rome, NY 13440 in memory of Ruth and her beloved dog Baby.
