Mauro, Sylvia M.

Mrs. Sylvia (Chambrone) Mauro, 85, of Sylvan Beach and formerly of Utica, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 28, 2013 with her loving family by her side. She was born and educated in Utica, the daughter of the late Emil and Mary (Scalise) Chambrone. On May 8, 1948 she was joined in marriage to Vito K. Mauro in St. Anthony’s church, a blessed union until his passing in 1975. Sylvia was a graduate of the Utica School of Beauty Culture and owned and operated Sylvia’s Beauty Salon in Utica for 40 years. During her career she served as the President of the National Hair Dressers Association, Utica Chapter, and provided services and mentoring for the then popular Hilton Hotel fashion show in New York City. Sylvia “Sis”, took great pleasure in cooking for her family and friends and always said “the more the merrier”. Everyone who came into contact with her, no matter how brief, had only good things to say. She was simply a beautiful person. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, “Nonnie”, and her grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her favorite past times were playing cards, word puzzles, sitting on her front porch at the beach, her penny slot machines at the casino and vacationing in Florida with her family. Surviving is one loving daughter, Kathy Mauro of Sylvan Beach, her cherished granddaughters and their spouses, Kristin and Duane Brown, Sylvan Beach, Shelly and Dennis Genge, Cape Coral, FL and Lauren and Joel Badger, Blossvale, her adored great-grandchildren, Nicole, Amanda, Carissa, Dennis, Jr., Austin and Alexis, a sister-in-law, Betty Mauro, NJ. She also leaves behind a dear cousin and confidant, Adeline Penc and family, her loving niece and nephews, Mary Lou Allard, Emil Chambrone, III and Angelo Chambrone, her infamous “button pusher” Jim Tebsherany and her beloved canine companions, Mickey, BoBo and Chloe. She was predeceased by one sister, Agnes Macior, brothers, William Chambrone and Emil Chambrone, Jr., a sister-in-law Rose Chambrone, a brother-in-law, Tom Mauro and her long-time companion, Joseph “The Shark” Sharkey.
