Anthony Peter Vagnoni, 87, of Rome, passed away on Saturday, November 4, 2017 while living at the Colonial Park Rehabilitation Center.
Anthony was born on September 12, 1930 to Samuel and Agnes Senali Vagnoni. He attended Rome Schools and participated in the basketball program at RFA. He occasionally worked at his father’s restaurant, Sammy’s, while In high school. He attended Niagara University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1952 with a degree in Economics.
After graduation he was drafted into the US Army getting advanced medical training at Brooke Medical, Fort Sam Houston, TX. He was then assigned to the 2nd field hospital in Munich, Germany. With his honorable discharge from Camp Kilmer, he returned to Rome and worked as a time management specialist at Revere, Rome Division. He later moved to Liverpool and worked at Crucible Specialty Metals in the areas of cost management and engineering.
Golf was absolutely his favorite pastime as an adult, enjoying his membership at Beaver Meadows. When he became ill, he returned to Rome where his greatest joy was having a beer and popcorn at DeMatteo’s or lunch at the Franklyn Hotel. He admired the work of the Rome Rescue Mission.
Anthony is survived by his many nieces and nephews; Patricia and Gene Gehman, Richard Garofalo, Charlotte Garofalo, John Vagnoni, Bernard Vagnoni, Jr., Jane and Agis Furmento, Christine and John Grenoble, David and Karen Vagnoni and Mary Kay and Ed Woodward. He was predeceased by a very young brother, Samuel Jr., a brother, Bernard Vagnoni and wife Elsie; a sister, Mary Garafolo and her husband Arthur Garofalo. Recently he lost his nephew Robert Garofalo. The loss of his long-time companion, Kathleen Kelley, left a hole in his heart.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to Barton Place of Rome, Brookdale of Clinton and Colonial Park of Rome for the care and love given to him in his final months.
Private funeral services will be held at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St. on Saturday morning with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating.
