Lucy M. Summa DeSalvo

Lucy M. Summa DeSalvo, 86, formerly of Rome, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at her daughter’s Michelle’s home in Virginia with her loving family by her side.

   She was born in Rome on December 29, 1930, the daughter of Vito and Carmella Oppito Summa.  Lucy married the love of her life James V. DeSalvo at St. John the Baptist Church on May 14, 1955.  She was a graduate of RFA, class of 1948 and a graduate of the Palmer School of Business.  She worked for many years at the former Loblaws Grocery Store and held various rental positions in Rome and Virginia.

   Lucy loved singing, baking and cooking for her family.  Her children and grandchildren always held a place in her heart.

   Lucy is survived by her beloved family, her husband James, a blessed union of sixty one years, daughters and sons-in-law, Roxanne and Michael Wehnke of Cortland and Michelle and Timothy Johnson of Potomac Falls, VA; five cherished grandchildren, Lucy’s greatest joy, Michael (Amy) Wehnke, Jeremy (Indira) Wehnke, Megan Kennedy, Kara (Nick) Graham and Brett Johnson;  three great-grandchildren, Alysha Wehnke, Aaron Wehnke and Mason Graham.  She also leaves behind a sister Grace Gannon of Nevada and a sister-in-law Edith Rebisz of Rome; numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved as if they were her own children.

   She was predeceased by her in-laws, Antoinette and Nazio DeSalvo, her brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Kay Oppito, Thomas and Delores Oppito and Sebastian Oppito; brothers-in-law, Richard Gannon and William Rebisz; sisters and brothers-in-law; Kate Oppito, Angie and Edward Barella, Mamie and Larry Sonsini, Mary and Sam Malorzo and Minnie and Henry Antonucci.

   Lucy’s friends were very important to her and they always had great times together and were there for each other.   She leaves behind her best friend, Joyce Spoon and was predeceased by her other best friend Delores Catalano.

   The family would like to give a very special thank you to Denise DeCarolis who assisted us with our mom’s medical while in Rome and Aleithia (Moe) Jones of Virginia who was her caregiver.

   Funeral services will be celebrated on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio as celebrant where relatives and friends are invited to attend.  Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery. 

   In lieu of flowers the family requests Mass Cards in memory of Lucy or donations to Alzheimer’s Association, Central New York Chapter, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St., Syracuse, NY 13204.  Envelopes will be available at the Church.

   Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St.
