Carl T. Pflanzer

Carl T. Pflanzer, 81, formerly of Rome and Daytona Beach, Florida passed away peacefully on November 4, 2014 in Chesapeake, Virginia after a long battle with Alzheimers.

He was born on January 7, 1933 in Marengo, Wisconsin a son of Frank and Martha Zier Pflanzer. On September 27, 1960 he married Patricia Doyle-Cawl. He proudly served with the USAF and ended his military career as a Korean War Veteran. After the Air Force, he took a job on the Great Lakes as a Ship Oil Tender. He then continued his dream of being a pilot ay attending the Embry Riddle School of Aviation and became an Air Traffic Controller and Flight Instructor. His airline career started with Mohawk Airlines in November 1959 and after many airline mergers he retired in December 1992 from US Air.

Carl was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He was a Scout Master for Troop 5, Boy Scouts of America where he received the highest award for leadership known as the Silver Beaver Award. He was an officer in Civil Air Patrol, a member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Assoc.) and the QB's (Quiet Birdmen, a pilot organization). In his free time he enjoyed clock building and drawing.

Carl is survived by his beloved family, his wife of 54 years, Patricia; sons and daughters-in-law, William and Theresa Cawl, George and Sharene Cawl, Carl David Pflanzer and Brian and Maureen Pflanzer; daughters and son-in-law, Kimberly Pflanzer and Kathryn and Frank Tucker; two foster sons, Kelly Crane and Bruce Gafner; cherished grandchildren, Joseph Cawl, John Cawl, Danny Cawl, Amanda Cawl and Haley Pflanzer; three great grandchildren, Ocean, Gracyn and Caden. The family would like to include many others, especially his Scouting and Civil Air Patrol family and Adoptive family that have touched our and his lives. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers, Gene, Jerry, Frankie and David and two sisters, Judy and Lois.

The family will gather for a memorial service on Saturday morning, February 7th at 10:00 at the Bottini Funeral Home, 120 W. Embargo St. and a service at 11:00 with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating; followed by a Celebration of Life at the Savoy Restaurant, 255 E. Dominick St. from noon until 3:00 p.m.
